Knowing Silence Zines
In the spring of 2024, I created a pair of zines based upon my book Knowing Silence: How Immigrant Children Talk About Immigration Status in School. They’re based on the book’s Interludes: short chapters that highlight immigrant children’s experiences of coming into contact with police officers in their schools and neighborhoods. The zine titles are inspired by children’s own words and each one incorporates conversations, photographs, and artwork that express the way these elementary-aged children felt when they saw police. Both zines include questions to spark conversation among educators, students, community organizers, and neighbors who are thinking together about immigration and education, policing and surveillance. The zines are free to download and available in 5 languages: English, Spanish, Haitian Creole, Arabic, and Mandarin. Links to the zines can be found on this page, including: multilingual translations, videos of me reading the zines aloud, and instructions for downloading and assembling. Shout out to the NYC-based students and educators who contributed to this project!
Please fill out the brief form on this page when you download the zines. I’d like to stay connected and be in touch!
